1984
- current Toyota Land Cruiser BJ70, BJ71, BJ73.
This is the short wheel base 70 series Land Cruiser.
The 70 series replaced the Jeep styled 40 series Land
Cruisers. The size is comparable or larger than Jeep
TJ. Generally the 70 series, 2 door models comes equipped
with FRP top which can be removed for open top Jeep
style cruising. This vehicle comes equipped with either
a 3.4 liter direct injection turbo diesel or 2.4 liter
indirect injection turbo diesel. Even though 60 series
Land Cruisers were offered in Canada with indirect injection
4 liter motor, we prefer direct injection motors. Direct
injection motors are more suitable for Canadian winters,
easy cold starting. The short wheel base Land Cruiser
has the best power to weight ratio, making it the ultimate
off road vehicle. Overall if you are in the market for
the most practical 4x4 this is it. Seats 5 passengers.
The 70 series is still in production in various configurations.
The fuel economy ranges from 7 - 10 liters / 100kms
of diesel for the 3.4 liter engine. The 2.4 liter engine
is even more frugal. The good news is that it is very
affordable.
1984 - 1989 Toyota Land
Cruiser BJ74V
Best of the 70 series would be the medium wheel base
BJ74V. Powered by the no nonsense 3.4 liter direct injection
turbo diesel, these engines are good for half a million
kilometers before a major service. BJ74V will be the
heavy duty version of the 70 series. If you want a life
time truck, buy a BJ74V. It is fuel efficient 7-10 liters
/ 100 km's, extremely rugged, easy to maintain and affordable
to own. The added space in the medium wheel base truck
will make it even more practical for every day use.
This truck seats 5 passengers with comfort, leaving
enough cargo space. Best suits Canadian climatic conditions.
1980 - 1989 Toyota Land
Cruiser HJ60V, HJ61V.
The 60 series Land Cruisers are the first comfort oriented
full size models made by Toyota. It is powered by a
4 liter direct injection engine in the HJ60V and HJ61V
gets a turbo version of the same motor. Again this diesel
motor is twice as frugal compared to the gasoline powered
versions. The 60 series was sold in small numbers in
Canada, both in gasoline and diesel versions. The diesel
variant used the 4 liter indirect injection non turbo
engine. The performance of the direct injection turbo
engine is outstanding. additionally Japanese models
were available with high roof and PTO winch as a factory
fitment which was never offered in Canada. This vehicle
is best suited for full size SUV buyer, long lasting
and frugal motor, overall a luxury SUV which can perform
wonders on and off road.
1987 - 1997 Nissan Safari
Granroad VRGY60 also called as Patrol
Nissan's answer to Land Cruisers was the safari also
known as the Patrol. Powered by a robust 4.2 liter diesel
motor. These vehicles soon became Land Cruiser alternatives.
Introduced in two models a short wheel base 2 door and
a long wheel base 4 door models. Both was powered by
the same motor. This vehicle is also highly recommended
for import, if you are into Nissan's. They are as capable
as the Land Cruiser or even better if you want a truck
which is small (2 door variant) yet more comfortable
than the 70 series. This model was not sold in North
America. It is larger and more expensive than Pathfinder.
Diesel
Powered SUV - Eligible for 2005 Import.
1990 - 1997 Land Cruiser HDJ81V (80 series)
The 80 series were sold in USA in large numbers but
was powered by the 4 liter 3FE gasoline motor called
FJ80 which made it an out standing gas guzzler rather
than a practical off road vehicle. Unlike our US brethren
now we have the opportunity to own the most powerful
4.2 liter turbo diesel direct injection 80 series Land
Cruiser. This vehicle features coil spring suspension
on all four corners, this is first for a Land Cruiser.
This model soon became the most sort after off and on
road vehicle. A choice for long distance drivers, who
encounters different terrain. The styling still commands
respect, often retains higher resale value than that
of the newer 100 series models. We have an in depth
knowledge about the 4.2 liter diesel motor. We are aware
of its shortcoming and its advantages. The 80 series
drives like a car, handles very well at highway speeds.
The coil spring suspension settings allows excellent
articulation making it a natural rock crawler. Everything
about this vehicle is heavy duty, including the sheet
metal which uses highly galvanized steel. Our recommendations
goes for this Cruiser, provided you follow our maintenance
procedures. Auction Price Range: $4500-8500
USD
1990 - current Land Cruiser HZJ77HV (70 series)
This model features 5 doors and a longer wheel base.
Powered by the 4.2 liter motor found on the 80 series.
The power to weight ratio is very high. If you are not
into looks but want the ultimate work horse, this truck
will be a good choice. The 70 series are still under
production. Serving many different types of needs in
the most remote parts of the world to the Australian
cities. These vehicles are so rugged that many developing
nations adopted 70 series for their military use. Some
other popular applications are troop carriers and ambulance.
Overall this rig will last for a long time and will
happily take the abuse you through at it.
